Birdwatching in Suffolk

By Does Your Duck Quack · Sources reviewed 25 October 2026 · Planning updated 27 October 2026

Minsmere is the mixed-habitat starting point for a Suffolk coast visit, with reedbed, lagoons, heath and shingle supporting possibilities from Bittern and Bearded Tit to Avocet. Carlton Marshes offers a north-east Suffolk wetland day, combining reedbeds and open water with breeding waders and winter ducks. West Suffolk has a different pairing: Lakenheath Fen’s reedbeds and wet grassland, or the lakes, scrub and woodland at Lackford. Boyton and Hollesley provide two separate arrivals in the lower Alde–Ore landscape; Hollesley’s lagoon has a seated viewing platform. Dingle Marshes brings coastal marsh, reedbed, woodland and shingle beside Dunwich, while Hen Reedbeds adds Wolsey Creek watching near Southwold. North Warren and the boat-dependent Havergate Island visit have their own full guides. Dunwich Heath and Beach remains closed following the wildfire, so its heath, beach and car park must not be treated as available additions to a Minsmere outing. The county’s coastal and inland visits have distinct entrances, terrain and seasonal interests.
