Felixstowe

Landguard's shingle and scrub make a coastal birding stop at the southern end of Felixstowe. The reserve operator's bird showcase includes Ringed Plover, Wheatear and Whitethroat; it does not give a reliable season for each of these records. Watch from the public routes and give fenced or signed wildlife protection areas plenty of space. The reserve can be approached from the seafront through Manor Terrace, making it possible to combine shore watching with a longer peninsula walk. Entry to the nature reserve does not grant access to the separate bird observatory compound, where visits have their own arrangements.

When to go and where to look

Spring and autumn are the migration-focused choices for Landguard, following the local RSPB guide’s advice to look for birds moving through the peninsula. Wheatear leads this entry’s sourced bird list, while Ringed Plover adds shore interest. Explore from the permanent public routes and consider a watch from the point for seabirds, rather than entering protected shingle or cordoned wildlife areas. The local guide notes that summer may be quieter. Choose the correct peninsula parking approach in advance, allowing for the distance to toilets at the View Point end. Nature-reserve access does not include entry to the separate observatory compound.
