Scarning Fen

By Does Your Duck Quack · Reviewed 20 October 2026

Western fringe of Dereham, off Fen Road · NR19 1LN

Scarning Fen is a small and fragile wetland on the edge of Dereham, best explored from its single public right of way. The main attraction is its rare fen plants and insects, but the Nar Valley Ornithological Society also lists Marsh Tit, Great Spotted Woodpecker and Bullfinch in its guide to Scarning Fen and neighbouring Rush Meadow. This is a quiet bird-and-wildflower stop for someone already visiting the area, with a more intimate scale than Norfolk’s better-known marsh reserves. Stay on the path to protect the sensitive ground. Limited roadside parking and rougher terrain make it worth keeping the visit simple and avoiding a large group arrival.

Birds and seasons
