Sparham Pools

By Does Your Duck Quack · Reviewed 20 October 2026

Near Lyng, River Wensum valley · NR9 5QY

Sparham Pools is a former gravel-working lake beside the River Wensum, with a circular path that makes a manageable inland birding walk. Winter is especially useful for waterfowl: NWT lists Goldeneye and Goosander alongside Shoveler, Gadwall, Pochard and Tufted Duck. Kingfisher is another reason to pause and scan the margins rather than keep walking. The deeper water attracts a different mix from shallow coastal scrapes, making this a worthwhile habitat change during a Norfolk visit. Summer brings insects and greener waterside vegetation. Start at the small reserve car park and follow the public route around the lake, with dogs restricted on reserve paths.
