Buxton Heath

By Does Your Duck Quack · Reviewed 20 October 2026

Heath Road, near Hevingham · NR10 4QH

Buxton Heath brings dry sandy heath and a wetter valley mire together north of Norwich. Its footpaths loop through a landscape of heather, gorse and patches of woodland, giving a broad public-path birding visit rather than a hide-based session. NWT lists Woodlark in spring, Nightjar in summer and Stonechat in winter, so the character of a visit changes with the season. Typically, patient listening is useful on heathland; stay on the paths and avoid playback around birds. The open ground also supports uncommon plants, butterflies and reptiles. Allow for uneven sandy walking and the cattle or ponies used to manage the vegetation.
