Litcham Common

By Does Your Duck Quack · Reviewed 20 October 2026

Litcham, near Dereham

Litcham Common offers a change from Norfolk’s coast: a mixture of open heath, grassy clearings and oak-birch woodland beside the village. The Nar Valley Way crosses the common, and the management group maintains paths and a public car park. A council walking guide identifies Great Spotted Woodpecker, Barn Owl and Woodcock among the site’s birds. Woodland edges and open areas give a visitor different habitats to watch during a modest walk. Conservation grazing helps keep the heath open, with ponies and seasonal cattle using the common. The western side can become boggy beside the River Nar.

Birds and seasons

  • Great Spotted Woodpecker — Typically all year
  • Barn Owl — Typically all year
