Earlham and Bowthorpe Marshes

By Does Your Duck Quack · Reviewed 20 October 2026

West Norwich, River Yare

These adjoining water meadows follow the Yare along Norwich’s western edge, bringing together grazing marsh, ditches, flooded ground and riverside scrub. The Wensum Valley Birdwatching Society describes summer warblers, resident Kingfisher and herons, and winter ducks along the combined walk. Bowthorpe Marsh itself has tall-herb fen, grassland and a small seasonal pond. It is a useful local alternative to a formal hide-based reserve: follow the public paths, pause at open river views, and allow for muddy or flooded stretches after wet weather.

Birds and seasons

  • Kingfisher — Typically all year
  • Little Egret — Typically all year
  • Reed Warbler — Typically summer
  • Teal — Typically winter
