Scolt Head Island National Nature Reserve

By Does Your Duck Quack · Reviewed 20 October 2026

Off Burnham Overy Staithe

Scolt Head is an offshore barrier island of sand, shingle, dunes and saltmarsh, reached on a planned boat trip from the North Norfolk coast. It offers a very different experience from a roadside reserve: a broad coastal landscape with internationally important birdlife and tidal channels all around. Natural England records summer terns and winter wildfowl here. Arrange the crossing and return before travelling, respect closed wildlife areas, and watch from the permitted visitor areas rather than approaching colonies or resting flocks.

Birds and seasons

  • Sandwich Tern — Summer
  • Common Tern — Summer
  • Arctic Tern — Summer

Plan your visit

Paths
Use only permitted visitor areas and follow local wildlife restrictions; the tidal channels are not a walking route to the island.

Mainland departure is Burnham Overy Staithe; confirm the crossing arrangements before setting out.
Dogs
Dogs are not allowed from April to August; at other times keep them under close control.
Accessibility
Boat boarding and soft coastal terrain require separate consideration when arranging a visit.

Getting there: Natural England lists a seasonal ferry from Burnham Overy Staithe, April to September; arrange the return crossing.
