Lower Wood, Ashwellthorpe

By Does Your Duck Quack · Reviewed 20 October 2026

Ashwellthorpe, southeast of Wymondham · NR16 1HB

Lower Wood at Ashwellthorpe is an ancient woodland with coppice, mature trees and paths crossing a flower-rich floor. Spring brings bluebells and wild garlic, while summer butterflies and autumn fungi add interest beyond birdwatching. NWT’s February 2024 guide names Blackcap, Chiffchaff and Willow Warbler in summer, with Nuthatch, Marsh Tit and Great Spotted Woodpecker present throughout the year. A slow walk gives time to listen through different layers of the wood, from low coppice to the higher canopy. The visitor car park has its own hours, although pedestrian access continues outside them, so separate the walk’s timing from vehicle access.
