Happisburgh and Walcott coastal paths

By Does Your Duck Quack · Reviewed 20 October 2026

Happisburgh, Cart Gap and Walcott

Happisburgh offers open sea, coastal fields and exposed paths, with the county club documenting both seawatching and passage migrants. The neighbouring Doggetts Lane route from Cart Gap adds another public walking option, so the two club recording locations are treated here as one coastal destination. Wheatear and Sand Martin occur in the warmer months, while winter records include Snow Bunting and Brent Goose. A council walking route also links the Happisburgh arrival point with Walcott. The coast is actively eroding: use the signed public routes, respect barriers and keep well back from cliff edges. Beach Road provides the main village arrival point.

Birds and seasons

  • Wheatear — Typically March–October
  • Sand Martin — Typically March–September
  • Snow Bunting — Typically October–February
  • Brent Goose — Typically November–April

Paths
Use signed public paths and current coastal diversions. Doggetts Lane runs northwest from Cart Gap; cliff-top watching is exposed with little shelter. The county council publishes a public circular route towards Walcott, starting at Beach Road.
Toilets
The county council walking guide confirms public toilets at Happisburgh Beach Road car park.
Parking
Beach Road has a pay-and-display car park. Cart Gap is an alternative starting point for the public lane; follow current car park notices.

Getting there: Arrive at Beach Road or Cart Gap parking and continue on foot along the signed public routes.
