Barton Broad and Marshes

By Does Your Duck Quack · Reviewed 20 October 2026

Irstead and Neatishead, near Hoveton · NR12 8AZ

Barton Broad combines an accessible woodland approach with an open-water view across one of the Norfolk Broads. A boardwalk passes through wet alder carr before reaching a viewing platform, making this a useful option for a short visit with binoculars. Common Terns and summer warblers give way to winter ducks, including Goldeneye, Pochard and Tufted Duck. Kingfisher is another species to watch for around the water. The public walking access covers only part of the broad, so plan around the boardwalk rather than expecting a lakeside circuit. Its sheltered woodland and wider water make an appealing contrast within the same outing.
