Birdwatching in West Midlands

By Does Your Duck Quack · Planning updated 27 October 2026

Sandwell Valley gives a West Midlands visit a mix of open water, reeds, meadows and woodland, with bird feeding stations adding a different watching opportunity near the visitor centre. The RSPB identifies a hide and six outdoor viewing places. Their approaches vary: one stony side route has a level alternative on a natural surface, while benches provide places to stop. At the centre, automatic doors and a level entrance sit alongside hearing-loop provision, movable seating and an accessible toilet. Hamstead station is the named rail approach, followed by the signed route towards Tanhouse Avenue. The smaller reserves broaden the choice of habitats without relying on Sandwell alone. Hill Hook combines a former mill pool with wet woodland and meadow; its named birds include Goosander, Great Crested Grebe and Nuthatch. Established paths and boardwalks begin from Netherstone Grove, with Blake Street offering a railway approach. Elmdon Manor supplies a contrasting woodland visit in Solihull. Its church-side entrance leads to generally flat paths, though winter ground can soften and become muddy. These are distinct reserve visits with their own public approaches, rather than interchangeable sections of the surrounding parks.
