The Covey, Surlingham · NR14 7AL
Wheatfen is a public fenland reserve managed by the Ted Ellis Trust at Surlingham. Its open fen, reedbeds, wet woodland and small broads make a varied walk close to Norwich. The operator points visitors towards Marsh Harrier from Crakes Path, Great Crested Grebe on Wheatfen Broad and Kingfisher along the Eleven Bridges route. These are places to watch from the permitted paths, with no promise of a sighting. The reserve opens daily from sunrise to sunset. Dogs are not allowed. Paths can flood in winter or after rain, and any signed closure takes priority over a planned circuit.
When to go and where to look
At Wheatfen, the operator names Crakes Path for watching Marsh Harriers across the fen throughout the year. It also points visitors to Wheatfen Broad for Great Crested Grebe and the Eleven Bridges route for Kingfisher, without stating a dependable season for those two. Use the established paths and boardwalks to compare these views, checking which seasonal or flood-prone sections are actually open. The summer path is not an all-year circuit, and dogs cannot accompany the visit. Begin with the map at the warden's hut, then choose a permitted route that fits current ground conditions.
