Birdwatching in Oxfordshire

By Does Your Duck Quack · Planning updated 27 October 2026

Oxfordshire offers floodplain marshes at Otmoor, reservoir and wetland paths at Farmoor, and a chalk-grassland and woodland contrast at Aston Rowant. Otmoor combines grazing marsh, reedbed, wet grassland, scrapes and hedgerows, with breeding waders, autumn migration and winter ducks and raptors giving different seasonal purposes. Farmoor provides broad open-water watching from the surfaced reservoir crest, with narrower countryside and wetland paths as separate options. Teal, Water Rail and Little Egret are named for January in the operator’s calendar, with Osprey in April. The official visitor arrival is Gate 3 on Cumnor Road; the reservoir-area map point is not a vehicle entrance. Aston Rowant brings chalk grassland, beech woodland and juniper into the comparison, with Red Kite overhead and Fieldfare and Redwing among its winter birds. Its Beacon Hill and Cowleaze Wood arrivals are separate starting points. Otmoor, Farmoor and Aston Rowant therefore offer marsh, reservoir and escarpment visits with different terrain and public routes, rather than one standard Oxfordshire wetland outing.
