Birdwatching in Fife

By Does Your Duck Quack · Planning updated 27 October 2026

Fife’s island, coastal and freshwater places need different visit plans. The Isle of May offers the island seabird experience, reached by boat from the mainland, but its operator retains an autumn-and-winter closure notice. A sailing needs a confirmed operating date. Around its rocky shore and 45-metre cliffs, breeding birds include Razorbill, Guillemot, Kittiwake, Fulmar and Eider, with Puffins using burrows in the grassland. NatureScot records more than a quarter of a million birds at the summer peak; migrants also pass through in spring and autumn. At Tentsmuir, the coast near the Tay’s mouth and the inland freshwater setting provide different alternatives. Tentsmuir Point’s winter selection includes Eider, Snow Bunting and Pink-footed Goose. Morton Lochs adds woodland and freshwater watching within the wider Tentsmuir visit options. Carlingnose Point, east of North Queensferry, offers coastal grassland and gorse beside old quarry cliffs. Fulmar is named around those cliffs, while the Scottish Wildlife Trust also lists Arctic and Common Terns among the reserve’s birds. These mainland choices can form separate outings from a confirmed island trip.
