Wilstone, north-west of Tring

Wilstone is the western reservoir in the Tring group, with open water and reedbed watched from the banks and the Paul Thrush Hide. The Wildlife Trust’s Wilstone account names Teal and Wigeon among winter visitors and Common Tern using the nesting rafts in spring and summer. The current reserve notice reports embankment works and path closures, while specifically retaining access to the car park and hide. Plan around that limited open route rather than expecting a complete circuit. This entry focuses on the Wilstone visit, with its own public arrival and lakeside watching place.

Getting there: Use the Wilstone car park off the B489, following the current operator directions. The pin follows the town council’s public car park grid, not a nesting raft. Check the Trust’s latest access notice before travel because the wider reservoir-bank paths remain affected by engineering works.
