St Helens Road, Leigh
Pennington Flash is a substantial wetland birdwatching destination in its own right, with open water, reedbeds, fen, scrub and woodland. The Wildlife Trust’s dedicated Pennington section names Willow Tit, Great Crested Grebe and Lapwing among its birds, while the local ornithological society describes the established birdwatching paths and hides. Begin from the main St Helens Road arrival and select a hide circuit rather than assuming one viewpoint covers the whole flash. Its inclusion within the wider Greater Manchester Wetlands landscape does not make it an individual pool within Wigan Flashes; these are separate named places.
