Lionel, Ness, Isle of Lewis
Loch Stiapabhat provides a freshwater birdwatching stop in Ness, near the northern end of Lewis. Its public observatory overlooks the loch, surrounding wetland and croftland. The RSPB-partner Bird of Prey Trail names Peregrine, White-tailed Eagle and Merlin among the predators attracted by birds using the reserve, with resident Buzzard also listed. Spring and autumn migration bring changing visitors, while the trail describes the winter half of the year as especially useful for raptor watching. This is a place to settle in the hide and scan the wider landscape, allowing birds to come and go undisturbed.

Getting there: At Lionel leave the A857 for Slighe Naomh Rònain/B8013 and use the signed reserve parking bay opposite the entrance. Follow the established hide approach, rather than entering surrounding crofts or wetland. The observatory is open throughout the year; allow time for quiet scanning.
