Garbat, between Garve and Ullapool

Ben Wyvis is a mountain birding outing with a demanding public ascent from Garbat. NatureScot names Ptarmigan and winter Snow Bunting on the high ground, with Golden Eagle another possibility. The route climbs from forest to An Cabar and follows the ridge, crossing a fragile upland habitat. Choose this visit only with suitable hillwalking experience, equipment and conditions; the summit return is normally a full mountain day. Wildlife watching should remain on the main public path, giving birds space and avoiding any search for nests. The car-park pin marks the start of the approach, far below the summit.

When to go and where to look

Choose a settled day that matches your hillwalking skills and the season of the birds you want to watch. NatureScot describes spring Ptarmigan and winter Snow Bunting, but reaching the upland habitat is a mountain outing. The public route from Garbat climbs steeply to An Cabar and continues along the ridge; there is no shelter on the high ground. Carry navigation, suitable footwear and warm waterproof clothing, and change the plan if conditions deteriorate. Remain on the main path to protect fragile moss heath, giving breeding birds space and keeping dogs under close control. A lower woodland walk is a separate choice.
