Gleann Mhiabhaig, near Miabhaig, Harris

North Harris Eagle Observatory offers a sheltered watch into Gleann Mhiabhaig from a purpose-built public viewing building. The RSPB-partner trail names resident Golden Eagle, autumn and winter White-tailed Eagle, and Merlin in the glen. The North Harris Trust confirms public access along a track from the roadside car park, with seating and interpretation inside the observatory. Scan the skyline and the wider hills from that established facility, giving the birds space. This is a walk into a mountain glen, so allow for the return journey and changing weather rather than treating the observatory as a drive-up hide.

When to go and where to look

Golden Eagle is a year-round reason to plan North Harris, with White-tailed Eagle adding particular autumn and winter interest in the existing bird evidence. Walk the public glen track from the roadside car park to the sheltered observatory, then settle to scan the hills and skyline from that established watching place. The managing Trust describes a local Golden Eagle pair and regular winter White-tailed Eagle visits; neither means an eagle will appear during every watch. Allow roughly thirty minutes for the approach as well as time inside and the return journey. Keep distant from nesting areas and prepare for changing mountain weather.

Getting there: Leave the A859 north of Tarbert for the B887 towards Huisinis and continue to Miabhaig. Park at the public track entrance and walk up the glen. The pin deliberately marks the published car-park grid NB101063; it does not mark bird territories or an island sea transfer.
