Pentyrch, northwest of Cardiff

Coed y Bedw is an ancient woodland reserve near Pentyrch, with damp alder woodland in the valley and oak, birch, beech and ash on its slopes. The Wildlife Trust’s site leaflet names summer Pied Flycatcher and Redstart among the woodland birds, alongside resident Nuthatch and other tree-dwelling species. Follow the public woodland paths for a quiet listening walk through the different woodland types. Mud, steps and stiles make suitable footwear important. Ash dieback is under management, so respect any signed path closures. Watch from the permitted routes without approaching nest boxes or searching for nests.
