Blackpill seafront, Swansea Bay
Blackpill is an established mainland wader-watching stop on the Swansea Bay seafront. The local RSPB group names Sanderling, Ringed Plover and Oystercatcher using the beach as a migratory feeding station. Watch from the promenade and give feeding or resting flocks space, rather than following them across the tidal flats. The broad tidal range uncovers and then covers extensive feeding ground each day, changing the view and the distance to birds. Tide height changes the amount of exposed shore, so a short visit is best planned around the water and the birds already present.
When to go and where to look
Plan Blackpill around migration and the state of the tide, because the local RSPB guide identifies the beach as an important refuelling place for Sanderling, Ringed Plover and Oystercatcher. It does not give a fixed annual viewing month for each bird. Scan the feeding shore from the promenade, allowing enough time to follow birds as exposed sand changes with the water level. A high tide can leave less feeding ground, but is never a reason to crowd a resting flock. This entry concerns Blackpill itself; the Kittiwake colony described farther along at Mumbles Pier is a separate watching location.
