West of Poppit Sands, Teifi estuary mouth
Cemaes Head overlooks the mouth of the Teifi estuary from Pembrokeshire's northern coast. Grazed maritime grassland, heath and cliffs support Chough, Fulmar and Shag, all named in the Wildlife Trust's reserve account. It is a stop for visitors already exploring the coast path rather than a quick step from a roadside viewpoint: the main approach from Poppit Sands involves a substantial walk. Keep to the public clifftop route and watch from a safe distance. The beaches below are inaccessible wildlife areas, and there is no need to descend towards them for a rewarding view of the headland.
When to go and where to look
The Wildlife Trust recommends March to September and December to January for Cemaes Head. Breeding Chough is the particular birding attraction, with Fulmar, Shag and Cormorant also using the cliffs. Scan the grazed clifftop grassland and sea-facing slopes from the established coast path rather than searching below the cliffs. The public approach from Poppit Sands is about two kilometres to the reserve boundary, so allow time for the return as well as watching stops. A closer car park is seasonal. Steep ground and exposed edges require care; keep dogs on leads and leave the inaccessible beaches to wildlife.
