Birdwatching in Lancashire

By Does Your Duck Quack · Planning updated 27 October 2026

Lancashire’s larger birding visits centre on Leighton Moss and Morecambe Bay, Martin Mere’s wetland landscape, or Brockholes beside the Ribble. Leighton Moss combines reedbeds and separate coastal lagoons, with Bittern, Bearded Tit and Marsh Harrier among its birds. Martin Mere offers a different mere-and-reedbed day, with Whooper Swans and Pink-footed Geese central to its colder-month appeal. Brockholes mixes freshwater lakes, reedbeds, meadow, woodland and river, supporting breeding waders, aerial hunters in summer and winter wetland birds. Hest Bank provides Morecambe Bay mudflat and saltmarsh watching for Curlew, Redshank and Oystercatcher. Hesketh Out Marsh adds restored saltmarsh on the Ribble, where a short surfaced approach reaches Karen’s Viewpoint and the longer seawall paths remain a separate option. That creates several genuinely different outings: a reedbed watch, a large wetland reserve visit, a river-and-lake walk or a tidal shore session. The individual public routes and seasonal notes help decide which of those Lancashire settings should shape the day.
