Birdwatching in Cheshire

By Does Your Duck Quack · Planning updated 27 October 2026

The Dee gives Cheshire two contrasting birdwatching visits. Burton Mere Wetlands has managed pools and reedbeds seen from a network of hides and viewpoints. Reception looks over the central wetland, Bunker faces the scrape and grassland, and Marsh Covert looks through the reeds towards Bridge Pool. Border Hide adds outlooks over the Border and Centenary pools. Avocet, Lapwing and Redshank are among the breeding wetland birds described here, while colder months bring interest from wildfowl and raptors across the estuary. Parkgate offers a more open saltmarsh watch from the former shoreline. The highest spring tides flood the marsh, but the RSPB’s described circuit uses local public footpaths rather than a managed reserve trail. Watching stays on those public approaches. Inland, Hatchmere combines a glacial lake with fen, wet woodland and heath. Its public viewing routes remain separate from private angling platforms, deep boggy ground and the neighbouring pub’s parking. Bickley Hall Farm offers another habitat change: a defined nature trail leaves the Sandstone Trail to visit a working farm managed for wildlife. Its visitor parking and toilets have specified weekday availability, distinct from access along the longer public trail.
