Limekiln Road, Cambridge

West Pit combines a former chalk quarry with mature woodland and grassland above Cambridge. The council names Song Thrush, Great Spotted Woodpecker and Treecreeper in its woodland bird community. Plants and insects are a major part of the reserve’s interest, including the rare moon carrot on the chalk. The walk can lead to a view over the city, but the setting is more uneven than many Cambridge greenspaces. Steep steps at each entrance mean this is not an accessible substitute for the flat riverside reserves.
