Castle Hill Road, Totternhoe
Totternhoe’s old chalk workings have developed into flower-rich grassland crossed by green lanes and public paths. The county bird club identifies Corn Bunting, Yellowhammer and winter Stonechat for this Wildlife Trust reserve, giving the open ground and scrub a clear birding interest. Scan from the established paths and allow time to work along the margins without entering the vegetation. The hills also have archaeological earthworks, which should be enjoyed from the public route. Conditions can become muddy, and the climb is a consideration even where the main uphill path is broad.
