Montagu Road approach from Freshfield station, Formby, Sefton
Freshfield Dune Heath offers a heathland and woodland birding walk inland from the Sefton shoreline. The Trust names Whitethroat and Linnet as breeding heathland birds, with Goldcrest using the birch and pine woodland. These are the reserve’s own birds, rather than a list borrowed from the neighbouring beach. Follow the approach along Montagu Road from Freshfield station, then use the paths within the eight-hectare reserve. The habitat changes between heath, scrub and trees reward a slow circuit, with watching confined to the established paths around the grazing areas.
