Near Witherslack
Foulshaw Moss offers a boardwalk visit to restored raised peatland beside the A590 near Witherslack. Cumbria Wildlife Trust identifies summer Ospreys, spring Tree Pipit and Stonechat, and winter Snipe and Teal among its bird interest. Established routes lead from the small car park across the moss to a viewing platform, allowing visitors to watch without entering the fragile, waterlogged bog. The reserve is open all year, with April to September recommended for a general visit. Stay on the boardwalks: the ground beyond them is very soft, with deep water in places.
When to go and where to look
Summer Osprey watching is the strongest reason to plan a Foulshaw visit. Cumbria Wildlife Trust describes nesting birds visible from the viewing platform, with spring Tree Pipit and Stonechat over the moss and migrating Ospreys passing in September. Follow the boardwalk routes from the small car park, pausing to scan the open raised mire rather than trying to get closer to nesting birds. The longer platform route is about 1.5 kilometres. Stay on the boards throughout: soft peat and deep water make the surrounding ground unsafe. The A590 entrance requires care, and limited parking means groups should check arrangements before arrival.
