Ebernoe, north of Petworth

Ebernoe Wildlands brings ancient wood pasture, grazed grassland and ponds into a substantial inland birding visit north of Petworth. Sussex Wildlife Trust names Nightingale, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker and Hawfinch for the reserve, with old trees and connected habitats giving the walk its character. Start from the church car park and use the established woodland paths. The Trust describes slopes, mud and steps, so this is a different proposition from a surfaced lakeside circuit. Listen from the paths and let birds remain within their cover.

When to go and where to look

Plan Ebernoe as a quiet woodland listening visit, with breeding-bird interest from Lesser Spotted Woodpecker and Hawfinch and Nightingale in the scrub. The Trust does not give a dependable month-by-month viewing schedule for those birds, so check its reserve information before choosing a target-led trip. Begin at Ebernoe Church car park and follow the established paths through the wood pasture, pausing where mature trees and open glades meet. Calls may reveal a bird before a clear view does. Slopes, muddy ground and steps affect the circuit; remain on permitted routes and give scarce breeding birds room to stay hidden.
