Milford · GU8 5BJ
Rodborough Common offers a public heathland walk close to Milford, with woodland and acid grassland adding variety to the open areas. Surrey County Council names Woodlark, Nightjar and Dartford Warbler among its birds. Three marked trails begin at the car park, providing a choice of routes rather than requiring a long crossing of the common. The Lizard trail passes through woodland and heath, while the Bell Heather route takes in sloping sandy ground. This is a useful inland birding stop for visitors able to manage unmade paths and gradients.
When to go and where to look
Use May to August, the Wildlife Trust’s recommended visiting period, for a heathland walk around Rodborough’s public trails. Woodlark, Nightjar and Dartford Warbler are the speciality birds named in the council’s site account; their exact months are not individually specified there. Choose one of the marked routes from the car park and pause on permitted paths to look across the open heath, with woodland and acid grassland providing a change of setting. The paths are unmade and can be sandy, uneven or slippery, and this is not a wheelchair-suitable circuit. Follow dog-control notices during the ground-nesting season and keep clear of grazing horses.
