Hodney Road, northeast Peterborough

Dogsthorpe Star Pit is a former clay quarry in northeast Peterborough, now managed for pools, reedbeds and wildlife-rich banks. The Wildlife Trust describes Kingfisher hunting in the pools and Snipe and Shoveler feeding around the water. Its varied habitats also support many insects. Follow the visitor paths rather than exploring the water's edge: the operator warns that water is deep and cold, while exposed clay can behave like quicksand. This is a walking visit with uneven ground and some steeper sections.
