Birdwatching in South Yorkshire

By Does Your Duck Quack · Planning updated 27 October 2026

The Dearne Valley and Doncaster offer separate wetland plans within South Yorkshire. At Old Moor, a choice of mapped routes links the viewing areas: Green Lane Loop runs for 1.2 kilometres, while both the Discovery Trail and Reedbed Path are 500 metres. Green Lane takes in Wath Ings, Wader Scrape and Field Pools. The wetland bird selection includes Bittern, Great Crested Grebe, Wigeon and Kingfisher, giving several reasons to spend time between the pool views. For a Doncaster visit, Potteric Carr brings wet grassland and woodland together with reedbeds and pools. Marsh Harrier and Bittern are among its birds. Beeston Hide appears in the Trust’s reserve photographs, while the visitor centre provides an accessible entrance and toilets. The Trust also identifies routes suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Adwick Washland gives the Dearne Valley a shorter open-view option. Restoration has changed former farmland into marsh and wet grassland, with water and grazing areas in the same landscape. Kestrel, Redshank and Wigeon are named by the RSPB. It offers a different scale of visit from Old Moor’s mapped hide network.
