Carmarthenshire’s main birding contrast is between the Burry Inlet wetlands at Llanelli and the Atlantic oak woodland and river at Gwenffrwd-Dinas. Llanelli combines lagoon and estuary watching, with Spoonbill, Black-tailed Godwit and Redshank among the birds associated with the reserve. Its wetland setting gives a very different day from following the wooded river at Dinas. Gwenffrwd-Dinas joins oak and wet alder woodland with scrub, upland grassland and moor, with Pied Flycatcher, Redstart and Wood Warbler among its spring migrants. Carmel adds a smaller woodland outing in a landscape shaped by limestone quarrying. Its marked Quarry Trail passes through deciduous trees and returns beside a seasonal groundwater-fed lake; Treecreeper, Great Spotted Woodpecker and Redstart are among the birds named for summer. Carmel’s steep initial climb and final steps make it a strenuous walk, and the old quarry faces and workings are outside the appropriate route. These named places offer wetland, river woodland and quarry-woodland visits with distinct access needs and seasonal purposes.
