South Lane, near Midgley, Wakefield

Stocksmoor Common preserves rough acid grassland and developing woodland near Midgley, a habitat combination increasingly uncommon in this part of Yorkshire. Yorkshire Wildlife Trust names spring Tree Pipit and Willow Tit, summer Yellowhammer and Linnet among its wider bird interest. Public permissive footpaths let visitors explore the change from damp grassland into birch, oak, willow and scrub. Traditional-breed cattle help keep the grassland open, so a visit needs to follow the permitted paths and give grazing animals space. This is a modest habitat-focused birding walk, without hides or visitor-centre facilities confirmed by the source.
