Headley, near Epsom · KT18 6NN
Headley Heath brings together open heathland, chalk downland and mixed woodland. The National Trust names Stonechat, Linnet, Meadow Pipit and Woodlark among birds heard during the warmer months. This gives the open heath a clear birdwatching interest alongside the views and walking trails. Several routes begin at the main car park on Headley Common Road, so visitors can choose a walk to suit the ground conditions. The heath is grazed and paths pass through a varied landscape; the published circuit includes slopes and steps rather than a uniformly level route.
When to go and where to look
The warmer months are the National Trust’s recommended period for listening to Headley’s Woodlark, with Stonechat, Linnet and Meadow Pipit also named in its bird-song account. Pause beside the open heath from established tracks, allowing time to listen before continuing through the changing heath, downland and woodland landscape. Exact Woodlark months are not assigned by the operator, so check current seasonal information when selecting a date. Choose a route suited to uneven ground: the published circuit includes slopes and steps. Use the main Headley Common Road car park, keep dogs on leads during the stated nesting season and allow for the absence of toilets.
