Southern tip of the Ards Peninsula, near Portaferry
Ballyquintin protects a low, exposed stretch of rocky coast at the southern tip of the Ards Peninsula. Its raised shingle banks, grassland and wind-shaped scrub provide a coastal habitat quite different from the sheltered mudflats farther inside Strangford Lough. DAERA names Stonechat, Whitethroat and Linnet in the gorse and scrub, while seasonal wildflowers add interest across the thin soils. The National Trust describes a public farmland approach towards the former wartime lookout. Treat the farm and reserve as one coastal outing, respecting residents and staying with the published visitor routes rather than entering private fields.
