Birdwatching in Kent

By Does Your Duck Quack · Planning updated 27 October 2026

Kent’s birding places range from the shingle and freshwater pits at Dungeness to Swale and Thames-side marshes, with Blean Woods providing a woodland contrast. Dungeness offers migration and winter interest across pools, wet grassland and the wider shingle landscape. Oare Marshes concentrates attention on estuary-side wetland, passage waders and winter wildfowl. Elmley’s grazing marsh, reedbeds and pools support breeding waders and winter raptors, while Cliffe Pools adds saline lagoons, freshwater pools and Thames shoreline. Northward Hill combines wetland and woodland; Sandwich Bay brings scrapes, dunes, woodland and coastal migration into a different visit. At Blean, woodland watching includes Nightingale and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker possibilities. Capel Fleet’s public viewpoint gives a shorter marshland watch on the Isle of Sheppey. Stodmarsh has two separate approaches, at the village and Grove Ferry, rather than a single interchangeable arrival point. The main choice is therefore between coastal migration, open marsh and a woodland walk, each with its own public watching places and practical access.
