Houghton-le-Spring, Sunderland
Rainton Meadows is a restored wetland reserve in Sunderland, with linked lakes, grassland and woodland around Durham Wildlife Trust’s visitor centre. The Trust lists Redshank, Oystercatcher and Lapwing as regularly seen waders. Public paths connect viewing areas across the lakes, making it possible to spend a focused visit watching the wet margins without attempting every path. Joe’s Pond forms part of this same visit rather than a second destination. Surfaced approaches to the lakeshore and bird hide are useful for visitors who want a shorter route, with hide access arranged through the visitor centre.
