Woodingdean, near Brighton

Castle Hill offers chalk grassland and scrub close to the eastern side of Brighton. Whitethroat, Linnet and Yellowhammer are among the birds named by Natural England, making the edges of scrub as interesting as the open slopes. Walk slowly and pause to listen before moving into the next part of the reserve. The site can be approached from Woodingdean or by tracks from the surrounding downland, so decide on an entrance and return route before leaving. It is a hillside walk rather than a promise of a flat circuit. A shorter outing with time beside varied vegetation can be a worthwhile introduction.

Getting there: Brighton & Hove City Council’s walking brochure places the Woodingdean car park at TQ356063, off Falmer Road. The map marks that published parking grid, not an individual bird location. Check your walking route before choosing an alternative approach from Kingston.
